Microturbine Cogeneration Application

National Center for Photovoltaics - NCPV Hotline: “In addition to its 30 kW electrical output, the Capstone MicroTurbine also produces heat that will be used to warm the water used by the site’s car wash, and for space heating in winter months, ‘creating a total energy efficiency of about 80%,’ according to the BP press release. “

Microturbine to Fuel Cell Usage

Local connections: “These simpler versions of conventional gas turbines, about one-fifth their size, produce electricity at a cost of $600 to $1,200 per kilowatt, compared to the $300 to $500 per kilowatt for utility-scale gas turbines. However, microturbines may be closer to expanding their tiny niche with hybrid designs that integrate the pint-sized power plants with fuel cells or energy storage systems for distributed power generation. “

Distributed Energy Program: Microturbines Program

Distributed Energy Program: Microturbines Program: “Microturbines are a new type of combustion turbine being used for stationary energy generation applications. They are small combustion turbines, approximately the size of a refrigerator, with outputs of 25 kW to 500 kW, and can be located on sites with space limitations for power production. Microturbines are composed of a compressor, combustor, turbine, alternator, recuperator, and generator. Waste heat recovery can be used in combined heat and power systems to achieve energy efficiency levels greater than 80 percent. In addition to power generation, microturbines offer an efficient and clean solution to direct mechanical drive markets such as compression and air conditioning. “
